Rock-Chalk Jayhawk

I've blogged about my battle with worshipping basketball. So, this is not a new subject.

I've been a Kansas Jayhawk fan almost as long as I've been a Piston fan. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas from 1981-87. When you live in Kansas, no disrespect, but you don't have a lot to root for. Yes, you have the Royals and the Chiefs.

The one thing you can truly boast in . . . the Jayhawks.

1. James Naismith, the inventor of hoops, coached at Kansas. BTW--he's the only coach in KU history to have a losing record.

2. Dean Smith played at KU.

3. Wilt Chamberlain played at KU.

4. KU is in the top three for all-time NCAA wins.

5. Rock-Chalk Jayhawk. The greatest chant in all of sports.

We'll see how Kansas matches up with the speed and athleticism of Memphis. I think Kansas will pull it out in the final two minutes of the game: 74-69. Then again, I've picked them every year since 1989.

But aren't the Chiefs and Royals really Missouri's teams? (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/Arrowhead+Stadium:US/)

I honestly don't think anyone remembers Dean Smith for his playing days.

Is that where Wilt started the quest for 20,000?

As corny as it sounds, you've never heard anything till you hear 80,000 Arkansas fans do the "Wooooooooooo Pig! Sooie!" cheer.

;-D

Russel (I'm too chicken to smack talk for Memphis lest I jinx them) W.

Yes...my prediction almost came to exact fruition. Anyone want to play the lottery?

Rusty,

1. People from Memphis cheer for the Braves and Cardinals because they don't have a team. So . . . People in Kansas root for the Chiefs and Royals because they are right next door.

2. Dean Smith was a great player, I'm surprised Billy Packer didn't give us his stats last night.

3. No, Wilt took a vow of celibacy while playing for God's team.

4. Rock Chalk is better than Pig Sooie. It's Arkansas.

KG

Thanks for being KU's good luck charm down the stretch. As soon as you came in the room, they turned it around :)

Josh,

We met at ZOE last fall. I always enjoy your blog. I too grew up in Kansas (1979-1989). We moved to Oklahoma the year after they defeated OU to win the championship. I wore my KU shirt at some point during the first week of school. This was not a good way to win friends. They were still irritated about the loss. It did not stop me from wearing it again.

Also, I think my dad still has a VHS copy of the 1988 championship game.

Thanks for the great blog.

Mark

Jamie: I'm all set for another ten years now that we got this championship.

Mark: Great to hear from you. Last night made up for the loss to Syracuse and Carmello a few years back as well as Roy's departure.

Have a great week. JG

Josh,
You sure you didn't post this after the game and somehow alter the date/time?? Gotta be one of the best games I've ever seen!! I really thought they had a good chance once Dorsey fouled out and Memphis fell back into their regular season pattern of missing free throws. Gotta hand it to Super Mario tho. What a shot!! And the way he and Collins avoided being fouled in the last few seconds of regulation was amazing. Too quick! (BTW, in Jeanne's bracket she picked KU & Memphis in the finals with KU winning! She humiliates me again.) Not only is there no better chant in basketball, there is no better venue than Allen Fieldhouse (especially when the chant starts echoing thru those rafters.) Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!!
Congrats!!

Throwing caution to the wind and putting myself out there for mockery. . .I have to ask about the cheer. What is "Rock Chalk--Jayhawk" in reference to? Does it have a purpose other than good alliteration for cheering?

I'm sorry I'm not a more well-informed sports fan. Football is my game, and I'm a total SEC girl anyway.
